In the summer of 2005, the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Banat from Timisoara (USAMVBT) celebrated 60 years of existence.
In its development, the university has come a relatively long way and not always easy, going through many stages, the most important of which are:
  • during the Vienna Dictate, the Faculty of Agronomy in Cluj functioned for 5 years in Timisoara (which, according to the Education Law of 1938, was subordinated to the Timisoara Polytechnic School);
  • the appearance of the Agrarian Reform Law no. 187/1945 constituted a normative act of reference, laying the patrimonial bases of the agriculture system that will be practiced in Romania in the period 1949 – 1989;
  • July 30, 1945 – the promulgation by King Mihai I of Romania of Law 617 for the establishment of the Faculty of Agronomy, within the Polytechnic of Timisoara, (Official Gazette, August 1, 1945);
  • the agrarian “reform” of 1948 meant, in fact, the Sovietization of Romanian agriculture, a fact that fundamentally modified the objectives of agronomic education;
  • between 1962-1976, under the leadership of the Rector Prof. Dr. Iulian Dracea, there was a substantial change in the agricultural education of Timisoara. The university campus was designed as a complex of buildings that bring together, on the same land, educational spaces, laboratories for scientific research, utilities for microproduction, social spaces such as dormitories and canteens, sports fields and recreational activities, etc. After its construction, it became one of the most modern university campuses in Europe at that time.
After December 1989, it became necessary to change the conception of the place and role of the specialist in the agri-food system and to redefine the labor market of the agricultural specialist.
By Order of the Minister of Education and Science no. 4894 of 22.03.1991, the name of the institution was changed to the University of Agricultural Sciences of Banat Timisoara (USAMVBT), and in 1995, by Romanian Government Decision no. 568, to the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Banat from Timisoara (USAMVBT).
Between 1990 and 2004, the university experienced a strong recovery. During this period, most of the educational spaces, the student dormitories and the canteen were redesigned and modernized, which acquired European standards.
The construction of the new educational spaces for the Faculty of Food Technology and the Faculty of Agricultural Management has started. In the autumn of 2004, on the occasion of the opening of the new year of university education, this new construction was partially put into use. Currently, this construction is fully used.
